Two degrees south of the Equator, surrounded by the unspoiled ocean, and by a number of smaller, equally beautiful islands, Lamu is the sun's gift to earth. Tiny villages nestle among coconut and mango plantations; lateen sailed dhows ply the waters; and everywhere there is the scent of salt.
Its remote position - the uppermost seas of northern Kenya - coupled with the fact that it has seen nigh-on ten centuries of trade, make for a unique soup-pot of well-maintained traditions, an exquisite cuisine, worldly knowhow, and a culture that knows very well how to treat its guests.
Best explored on foot (there are no vehicles), Lamu is guaranteed to relax and refresh even the most hectic of schedules.

This beautiful House was completed in 2004 by London based photographic agent Katy Barker. Katy has been coming to Lamu for the last eight years and recognised it as the ideal setting for a private holiday home.
Situated in Shela village - a tangle of winding lanes, tall stone houses, mosques and ruins built about a central square - the house has a full staff of seven, a swimming pool, comfortable cool interiors and lush green gardens.
Literally five minutes from Lamu Town's square, the House is superbly positioned. Ringed by local stalls, small shops and a single telephone booth, the square is Lamu's pulse, and a fine compliment to the pristine swimming beaches that lie across the dunes.
Probably the finest private house in the archipelago, this Beachfront House sleeps ten in five rooms spread across two floors, and overlooks a small beach where master boat-builders have been making dhows for longer than we can remember.
