Around the times of pirates and pillaging, the property was known as Stonehenge, so named for a clump of large stones across the road. The house was renovated around 1930 to become the Italianate villa of tremendous proportions that it is today.
Many celebrities, royal, political, and glamorous, have lived in the villa over its fascinating history. From British Admiralty to diamond magnate De Beers, Jan Smuts, founder of the League of Nations and friend and advisor to Winston Churchill and the Greek Royal Family.
Hovering over False Bay with 360-degree views of mountain and sea, this enchanting and luxurious Villa is fully restored and decorated in a blend of collectable deco, nautical accents, African and Cape Dutch influences, with modern eclectic furnishings with rich fabrics, rare woods, carpets, lighting, and Italian Frette linens.
This Villa accommodates up to 20 people in 8 large bedrooms with extra long beds and five bathrooms. The bedrooms, each unique in character, are located upstairs and have sea and/or mountain views. Some are inter-leading and feature private outdoor or indoor balconies. The ground floor features an elegant dining and conference room with fireplace and grand table seating 22. There are also two lounges with fireplaces, a unique collection of old and new literature and art volumes, and fine modern stereo equipment with over 400 musical cds in the library. Common rooms include a cinema and satellite TV room, billiard room, English pub, indoor and outdoor terraces, a grapevine trellised patio, and a guest cottage.
The outdoor pool is a stones throw from the shimmering blue Indian Ocean and set amidst an indigenous garden with over 260 rare and well-known plant species. St James beach is steps from the property, with fascinating rock and tidal pools for swimming and a tennis court.
Also walking distance from the Villa is enchanting Kalk Bay village, with its antique shops, fine restaurants, sophisticated shopping, fishing harbour, historic walks, and museums. Constantia Wine estates, golf courses, yachting, kite surfing, deep-sea fishing, shark diving, whale watching, hiking, caving and more are all within 10 minutes of the Villa.
