Stepping up from the turquoise waters and rocky shoreline of the Bay of Formentor, overlooking an island bird sanctuary from between tall, shady pine trees, this lovely, family holiday home evokes a spirit of sun-filled summer days spent with friends - boating or swimming off its waterfront platform, bathing on the beaches nearby or dining by candlelight on its terraces – created by its openness to the sea, its relaxed charm, privacy and ambience.
From the property’s entrance gates, steps lead down through its terraced garden to an archway onto a small patio courtyard - with Mallorcan stone walls and palms – and to the main villa itself: a secluded, terracotta-coloured home with green wooden shutters and sloping tiled roofs, originally built in the 1950’s, then restored and developed in classical Spanish style by its current owners, some twelve years ago.
Its antique olive wood door opens into a whitewashed hallway, leading through to the main living salon – a spacious, lofty, sloping-ceilinged, open-plan room, with a wood-burning fire, white suite, low coffee table, writing desk and six louvred French doors opening onto its terrace and/or sea views. To the right of this salon, a barrel-roofed dining/breakfast room leads on one side to the large kitchen (with staff dining area) and, on the other, steps through shuttered French doors onto the main terrace, where there is a long, marble dining table, beneath a sloping, beamed roof.
A second, raised roof extends over the main area of the terrace, furnished with a cane suite, coffee table, bar and hanging or potted plants. Across its bougainvillea-covered stone balustrade, the terrace offers sweeping views across the rocky shoreline, wooded, mountainous coast, and sparkling waters of the Bay of Formentor.
To the left of the hallway, a corridor leads past a guest shower-room to an attractive double bedroom with a wrought-iron, canopy bed, French doors, opening onto the outside garden pathway, and a bathroom it shares with a second double bedroom – with a private sea-view balcony and hearth – that is accessed from the main living salon.
Steps from the hallway lead down to the lower level hall, off which is the main bedroom (with archways separating its seating/study and sleeping areas) which has an attractive canopy bed, a larger bathroom - with a dressing area and antique, claw-footed tub in an arched alcove - and shuttered doors onto a small terrace.
Next is an en suite double bedroom (that can easily be converted into a twin for small children), then two more en suite double bedrooms. All bedrooms on this level open through shuttered French doors onto a second, spacious tiled terrace with built-in white sofas, looking through archways across the bay of Formentor. All bathrooms are decorated in a pretty yellow colour scheme and local tiles.
To the right of main terrace there is a small swimming pool and steps down to a lower lawn level, from where further steps pass by a small stone patio area and then down to a pathway that meanders via a series of shallow steps to a seafront platform with a bar, bbq, thatched sun-shade and diving board. This platform serves as an outdoor living area in summer – either for bathing, swimming, relaxing or enjoying bbqs.
Between the entrance gate and the main villa, the path passes a guest annexe that houses one more double bedroom (with only a small shower room) that might be suitable for extra visitors, children or staff – plus two twin rooms used by the household staff.
The villa’s site means it benefits from the coastal breeze, ensuring the property stays cool and calmed by the sound of the sea and the wind in the pines. Please note the owners’ two dogs (friendly, impeccably behaved golden retrievers) are also kept outdoors on the property.
